Chris McCaw The Powerhouse Portland OR HOPE Art Palladium Print SH265-13
Chris has been in the darkroom since the age of 13 and has never left. His first handmade camera built in 1995, a 7"x17" view camera, provided the machine to make negatives for contact printing in the platinum/palladium process. After working the boundaries of analogue photographic mediums with his Sunburn project, he continues to rethink traditional use of photographic materials. Still building his own cameras, he is currently manipulating the mechanics of how cameras record time. His work is held in twenty-seven national and international public collections. "HOPE, is kinda of the hero image from my series, The Powerhouse, a 1990's punk house in Portland, OR where the average number of people living there was 14 and the average rent per person was around $30 a month. Everyone was either in a band or an artist of some sort. The basement was a music venue for traveling bands whose gigs fell through. A safe house for runaways. Food Not Bombs made food for the homeless there. This is an interior view of one of the rooms there where I also had hope for this way of communal living, being young, and living a life with time to enjoy it. In the same DIY spirit, the camera used to make this was hand made by me a few years earlier, as was the hand coated platinum/palladium print."
